For lean mice – and possibly for lean humans, the authors of a new study predict – the anti-aging strategy known as caloric restriction may be a pointless, frustrating and even dangerous exercise.
“Today there are a lot of very healthy people who look like skeletons because they bought into this,” said Raj Sohal, professor at the University of Southern California’s School of Pharmacy.

Tahoe City, CA. (January 23, 2009) – The 2nd Annual North Lake Tahoe Shop Local Contest, held during December at business locations from Tahoe City to Kings Beach and developed to encourage re-investment of local dollars, was a “huge success” according to local merchants and program coordinators.
“There was a lot of enthusiasm for this year’s program,” said Carol Hester, owner of Geared for Games, located in the Boatworks Shopping Mall in Tahoe City. “We saw a definite increase in business from the local promotion efforts and people looking to spend locally this year.”
According to program’s “shop local card” entries more than $30,000 was reinvested at participating local North Shore businesses. “Shopping locally is very important for the economic vitality of our North Shore community,” said Cheri Sprenger, Executive Director of the North Tahoe Business Assocation, which helped produced the program with the Tahoe City Downtown Association. “The holiday program put together by the NTBA and TCDA was a fun way to help spread the message that spending your dollars locally ensures that more of that money is reinvested in our own communities.”

What is the Mexico City Policy or Global Gag Rule?
Global Gag Rule – (Reuters) Jan 23 – U.S. President Barack Obama lifted restrictions on Friday on U.S. government funding for clinics or groups which provide abortion services or counseling for the procedure overseas. The restrictions have been dubbed the “Global Gag Rule” by critics.
Q: WHAT IS THE MEXICO CITY POLICY/GLOBAL GAG RULE?
A: Under the rule, no U.S. government funding for family planning services can be given to clinics or groups that offer abortion services or counseling in other countries even if the funds for those activities come from non-U.S. government sources.

It’s official. The gag rule is no more. (At least until our next anti-choice president, if legislative action isn’t also taken.)
International funding can now go to organizations that provide abortions with other funding, or simply offer counseling about abortion as an option from a different provider. Desperately poor women with high risk pregnancies won’t have to die because their doctor can’t tell them about termination options. Many will have more access to safe abortion care, and won’t die or face permanent injury due to risky do-it-yourself procedures. Women won’t have to get pregnant because their local birth control clinic had to choose between no funding or substandard, dishonest care, and subsequently closed down.

Jeanne Deckers (1933-1985) is famous all over the world as ‘The Singing Nun’ and for her massive hit “Dominique”, which reached number 1 all over the world and sold more than 1.5 million copies. She is the only Belgian ever to achieve a number one hit in America and temporarily topped such heavy hitters as Stevie Wonder and The Beatles in the charts.
She joined the Dominican Fichermont Convent in Belgium as Sister Luc-Gabrielle. She was popular in the convent for her music and was encouraged by the other nuns to record an album in 1963. One song, “Dominique,” soared to the top of the charts. Overnight, the Belgian nun was an international celebrity with the stage name of Soeur Sourire (Sister Smile). She performed in concerts and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. In 1965, a movie called The Singing Nun, starring Debbie Reynolds, was made about her, though she rejected the film as “fictional”.
Around the same time, she stopped performing and entered a rigorous religious life in the convent. In 1967 she left the convent and recorded her second album, aptly titled “I Am Not a Star”. Though she was deeply religious, she was also increasingly critical of the conservatism of the Roman Catholic Church and she became an advocate of birth control.
