Claim Your Cash at the Seattle Home Show
Seattle, Feb. 12, 2008 — Have a remodeling project in mind? If you attend the Seattle Home Show this Saturday, you might find out you have some cash coming to help pay for it.
The Washington State Department of Revenue will staff a booth at the home show at the Qwest Field Event Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 16, in conjunction with a promotion by radio station B97.3. The booth is located on the main floor near the show’s information center.
The odds of finding something to claim are better than ever, Unclaimed Property Manager Patti Wilson said. That’s because the unclaimed property database contains more than three million names that have been collected since the 1950s, and about $600 million in unclaimed property.
“You literally have a 50 percent chance of finding out that you have money coming from a forgotten paycheck, refund, security deposit or similar item,” she said.
If someone can’t make the home show event, they can always search online at www.ClaimYourCash.org, she added.
Businesses are required to report unclaimed property annually, and the amounts being reported have grown sharply over the past several years, thanks in part to educational efforts by the Department.
Last year, the Department returned a record $39.4 million to more than 82,000 claimants, with 44 percent of them making claims online to speed up the payment process, she said. The Department also has been mailing claim forms to the last know addresses of potential claimants whose names were reported to the Department last fall, and who have more than $75 coming.
