Stem cell research seen boosting New York’s economy

Unfettered embryonic stem cell research may take years to cure diseases, but it could quickly boost New York’s economy, with millions in federal funds for local research centers, elected officials and scientists said yesterday.

“It’s not only a matter of what’s right in terms of research and cures for cancers and diabetes. It’s also a matter of what’s smart in strengthening the economy with new jobs in science and research and medicine,” said Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington).

As the ethical debate swirls over embryonic stem cell research, supporters of the work are increasingly citing its potential to create high-paying jobs. More than $10 billion of funding to the National Institutes of Health, which will oversee the research, was included in the economic stimulus package.

President Obama lifted restrictions on funding for human embryonic stem cell research this morning and issued a presidential memorandum aimed at insulating scientific decisions across the federal government from political influence.

Obama took care to emphasize that the order would not “open the door” to allow human cloning, which he said is “dangerous, profoundly wrong and has no place in our society, or any society.” But the president said stem cell research has enormous potential to further understanding and treatment of many devastating diseases and conditions. America, he said, should play a leading role in exploring the stem-cell research frontier.

Oxana Malaya was a Ukrainian who was found in 1991 when she was 8 years old behaving oddly like a dog rather than a human being. Not only does she barks and behave like a dog, but Oxana Malaya thinks like a dog because she was abandoned by her parents that she lived in a kennel where she lived with these animals for some time.

A relatively famous case is that Amala and Kamala of India circa 1920, who were reportedly truly raised by wolves. They were “rescued” and “adopted” by one Rev. Joseph Amrito Lal Singh, rector of a local orphanage. Being past critical ages for socialization and language learning, the girls experienced great difficulty in human society.

There have been many cases in more recent years including Ivan Mishukov, found living with a pack of street dogs in Russia, or Oxana Malaya (pictured above, image from Channel 4, UK), who spent a few years living with dogs after her deadbeat parents abandoned her.
