The best 2009 NFL Draft grade goes to…
Minnesota. Or Jacksonville. Or Tampa Bay. Or maybe Buffalo. Dallas, perhaps?
Because predicting who’ll get the most out of their draft class a day before the event is about as reliable as predicting it the day after the draft.
Consider this article, from ESPN’s 2005 draft archive, titled “Solid drafts move Cardinals, Vikings forward,” which provides us with the following excerpt:
The Vikings got playmakers on both sides of the ball in the first round, surprising some pundits by choosing wide receiver Troy Williamson over Mike Williams and adding to a fast-improving, young defensive front with pass-rush end Erasmus James. But the Vikes not only started fast, they finished nicely as well, adding “value board” prospects such as offensive lineman Marcus Johnson (who could replace right guard David Dixon), corner Dustin Fox (a potential “nickel” contributor as a rookie) and tailback Ciatrick Fason. If coach Mike Tice is as serious as he claims to be about returning to the power run game that Minnesota abandoned in 2004, Fason could be a factor.
12th Pick in the NFL Draft – Denver Bronco Knowshon Moreno!
Every season, there are certain running backs who capture the excitement of football fans all over the country. The ability to juke, the power to overrun, the soft hands receiving and the hard hits of blocking all have their proponents.
A very few players seem to have all four of those talents. Those players will inflame people’s enthusiasm, ignite their passions and arouse in them a desire to see this guy, this one young man, as the next integral piece of their NFL team, a belief that this single cog will be the battery off of which an offense can be run. This year, hands down and without question, that player is Knowshon Moreno – and he’s a Denver Bronco! (from here)
Recap – NFL Draft Day No. 1
The Packers had two picks on Day No. 1 of the NFL Draft, but one of the picks wasn’t what we were expecting. They had the Nos. 9 and 41 picks overall, but went and made a trade with New England. A 1st (No. 26) and a 5th (No. 162) for a 2nd (No. 41) and two 3rds (Nos. 73 and 83).
No. 9 overall: Boston College DT B.J. Raji. He’s been the projected pick for about the last three weeks. The run defense was awful last season and he’s the best defensive tackle in the draft, so this makes a lot of sense. At 337 lbs. he fits the bill as a nose tackle in a 3-4. There has been some talk that he’s athletic enough to play end in a 3-4, but I doubt that will happen much. Maybe in short yardage situations. They are switching to a 3-4, but defensive coordinator Dom Capers has said they will play in a 4-3 formation too. So they still need two defensive tackles some of the time (a lot of the time?). He’ll probably get a chance to beat out DT Ryan Pickett and DT Johnny Jolly as the lone tackle in the 3-4, but all three will play a lot in a rotation. (From here)
2009 NFL Draft at Rumblings: Bills Day One Recap
Day one of the 2009 NFL Draft featured a dozen trades and plenty of surprises – including several eyebrow-raisers made by your Buffalo Bills. In the end, four players are now the newest members of the Buffalo Bills: DE Aaron Maybin, OG Eric Wood, DB Jairus Byrd and OG Andy Levitre.
Obviously, a lot went on today – and if any Bills fan tells you that they saw this result coming, laugh loudly in their face, folks. We’ll break down everything that we know happened today below – and then turn it over to you guys for your thoughts on day one, our new players, and of course, a day one grade.
1-11: Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State (Coverage)
We knew going in that Alabama OT Andre Smith sat at the top of Buffalo’s board. I got a phone call early this afternoon, however, that I didn’t expect – I was informed earlier today that if Smith wasn’t available (and he wasn’t, going No. 6 overall to Cincinnati), that Maybin would be the pick for the Bills.
Here’s the scoop – the Bills liked Tennessee’s Robert Ayers (who eventually became a Denver Bronco). But they realized he wasn’t a playmaker. They needed a defensive playmaker more than any other position in this draft, and they think they have that player in the speedy, athletic and long Maybin. They are certainly taking a risk with this pick – but it’s a risk worth taking for a franchise that hasn’t been to the playoffs in nearly a decade. He’ll be counted on as a situational pass-rusher as a rookie – and the team was keenly aware that their woeful pass rush needed to be addressed first and foremost. (From here)
