caviar for the love of ray j – Cocktail Wins For the Love of Ray J. Joanna the Cocktail Waitress Won the VH1 Reality TV Show
On April 20, 2009, VH1 aired its season one finale of the reality television series For the Love of Ray J., and it was then that viewers learned that Cocktail won; Ray J. picked Cocktail after eliminating slightly-psychotic Danger and then hypocritical-yet-conservative Unique.
Cocktail’s Time On the For the Love of Ray J. Cast
A 26-year-old Sacramento, California cocktail waitress named Joanna arrived on the set of For the Love of Ray J., along with more than a dozen other girls:
* Chelsey (Lil’ Hood)
* Christa (Chardonnay)
* Danielle (Unique)
* Elizabeth (Caviar)
* Elizabeth (Feisty)
* Ja’Wanna (Hot Cocoa)
* Jerri (Atomic Bomb)
* Jillian (Genuine)
* Keyonna (Naturalle)
* Leah (Cashmere)
* Monica (Danger)
* Sharee (Stilts)
* Summer (Stacks)
One by one, R&B singer and actor Ray J. (best known as Brandy’s little brother, who starred on her sitcom Moesha) eliminated the cast members of For the Love of Ray J. until just three girls remained: Danger, Cocktail and Unique.
Many reality television fans who watched the VH1 show probably remember Cocktail for her tendency to cry (in particular, she cried on the first day she met Ray J. ) and her propensity for being a tattle tale. She exposed many of the other cast members’ dirty little secrets. Cocktail’s mission to “expose” her fellow For the Love of Ray J. cast members made her less than popular with many of the other girls, but it made her a favorite with Ray J. himself.
The Season Finale of VH1’s For the Love of Ray J. – Who Wins?
The final episode of For the Love of Ray J. begins with an announcement: Ray J. will be flying to each girls’ hometown to meet the family before he makes his final decision on who will be the “winner.” Just three cast members remain – Danger, Unique and Cocktail.
Danger is the next to be eliminated; she experiences a panic attack when Ray J. announces that he’ll be meeting each cast member’s family. Danger’s panic attack makes Ray J. realize what a heavy emotional tax the show has taken on the girls, especially Danger. So Ray J. makes the difficult decision to send Danger home.
Ray J. then makes his way to Cleveland, Ohio to meet Unique’s family. Unique explicitly tells Ray J. to put his celebrity persona of “Ray J.” on the back burner, urging him to instead be “Willie” (Ray J.’s real name is Willie Ray Norwood, Jr.). This move is one that later comes back to haunt Unique.
Once Ray J. overcomes his profound nervousness (complete with profuse sweating and stammering), he feels rather at home with Unique’s family, despite the fact that her mother insisted on interrogating Ray J.
Later, Ray J.’s went on a final solo date with Unique, and while they clearly connected since Unique began to let her guard down, she’s later haunted by her decision to tell him that she was “unsure” about her feelings for him up until the very end.
Ray J.’s meet-the-parents experience with Cocktail was very different and he felt significantly less at ease with Cocktail’s family, though she won points by keeping the experience low-pressure and encouraging him to simply be himself. But Ray J. clearly felt much less “at home” with Cocktail’s family, as there was a language barrier issue with Joanna’s mother (who speaks only Spanish) and a cultural barrier that was brought to light when he was served goat meat for dinner.
Ray J.’s date with Cocktail was a winner. Cocktail made the wise move of highlighting the way that Unique was unwilling to accept Ray J. as-is, though he does bring up concerns about Joanna’s admitted dependency on men for happiness. But unlike with conservative Unique, Cocktail’s evening landed her in the shower with Ray J. Clearly, there existed a strong chemistry between Cocktail and Ray J. that simply wasn’t present with Unique.
Ray J. Picks Cocktail Over Unique
In the end, Ray J. picks Cocktail over Unique, primarily due to Cocktail’s willingness to accept him as-is. And it’s that willingness to accept Ray J. — faults and all — that contributes to his decision to pick Cocktail as the winner of For the Love of Ray J.
