Steelers take Ole Miss WR Wallace

Steelers selected Ole Miss WR Mike Wallace with the No. 84 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.
Make no mistake, Wallace is a threat to Limas Sweed’s playing time. Sweed is a long, lanky split end type, and Wallace at 6′0/199 with 4.3 speed could help Pittsburgh in the slot. Wallace is also going to compete for return chores, but it could be an option competition for the No. 3 receiver job.

Mike Wallace Selected In Third Round Of NFL Draft By Steelers

Ole Miss wide receiver Mike Wallace becomes the third Rebel player selected in the 2009 National Football League draft here Sunday as the Pittsburgh Steelers chose him in the third round as the 84th overall pick.

Other Ole Miss player selected this year were Michael Oher and Peria Jerry, having been drafted Saturday in the first round at No. 23 and 24 by the Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons, respectively.

Wallace is the first Rebel chosen by the Steelers since Kendrick Clancy was the 72nd overall pick in the third round of the 2000 draft.

“I’m very proud of Mike,” said Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt. “He’s a speed wide receiver with special teams value. With two first rounders and now Mike in the third, this helps our recruiting.”

A 6-0, 180-pounder from New Orleans, Wallace earned four letters with the Rebels and saw action in all 37 contests his final three seasons. He ranks second all-time at Ole Miss in all-purpose yardage, third in TD receptions and fifth in receiving yards.
