Weight: 312
College: Houston
Conference: Conference USA
Hometown: Kaarst, Ge
High School: Quirinus Gymnasium
Pick Analysis: The Patriots pick up an intriguing developmental prospect in Vollmer. The former Cougar started his college career as a tight end but he developed into a quality offensive tackle prospect as a senior. Though he lacks the athleticism to play left tackle as a pro, Sebastian Vollmer has the size and length to develop into a starting right tackle in time.
Overview
Sebastian Vollmer is one of the more unusual stories in this year’s draft class. He did not start playing football until he was 14 years old, but still helped his German prep school win two national championships.
U.S. college coaches lined up to sign Sebastian Vollmer after he appeared in the 2004 Global Junior Championships in San Diego. Sebastian Vollmer spoke almost no English when he signed with Houston.
He started out as a 250-pound tight end before growing into a first-team All-Conference USA left tackle as a senior. Although he missed the 2006 season with major back surgery and will turn 25 in July, Sebastian Vollmer’s upside, size and athleticism means he’ll be selected sometime mid-afternoon Sunday on draft weekend.

Patriots day for UH’s Vollmer Lineman goes to New England with 58th pick
There were rumblings Houston offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer’s stock was rising as the NFL draft neared. And those rumbling proved correct.
Once considered as low as a sixth-round prospect by some, Vollmer was selected in the second round by the New England Patriots with the 58th overall pick.
Who’s calling?
Vollmer, who wasn’t even watching the draft when he received the phone call, was shocked to hear Patriots coach Bill Belichick and owner Robert Kraft on the other line.
“My heart was beating; I was just super excited,” Vollmer said. “It was just an amazing feeling.”
He is the fourth Cougar to be selected in the second round of the draft in the past five years.
Vollmer, who is represented by agent Leonard Roth of Houston, wasn’t a typical first-day pick, however. He wasn’t invited to the NFL scouting combine and wasn’t even originally invited to an all-star game.
Vollmer, a native of Germany, eventually made his way into the East-West Shrine Game, which was held on the UH campus, and he took full advantage of the opportunity.
It was during the East-West Shrine workouts that the Patriots took notice of him. Dante Scarnecchia, the Patriots’ assistant head coach/offensive line, then ran UH’s pro day, and he put Vollmer through offensive line drills. His versatility intrigued the Patriots, Belichick said in an interview with ESPN after selecting Vollmer.(From here)
