Virginia Employment Commission opens new office in Bedford

The Virginia Employment Commission opened an Unemployment Express office Monday in Bedford.

The VEC’s express offices are designed to ease the process for filing unemployment claims through “an abbreviated service model.”

Claimants can apply for benefits in person, apply online or use available phones to call the VEC Customer Contact Center.

The express offices do not accept incoming phone calls from the public and do not help with job searches. If computers are available, customers can use them for job searches and filing claims online. The offices do not work with employers; VEC’s full-service work force centers do.

“The only function will be to assist those who are filing claims for unemployment or have issues with their claims,” said Joyce Fogg, a spokeswoman for the VEC.

Fogg said there eventually will be six express offices around the state. Offices in Richmond, Newport News, Danville and Bedford already are open. Federal money designed to help with increased recession-related claims for unemployment benefits is paying for the offices.

The Bedford office is at 584 Blue Ridge Ave. in the Westgate Shopping Center.

Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays.
