Broad Street Run Kicks Off

Almost 27,000 Runners Compete in Broad Street Run

Rain did not dampen the spirits of the 27,000 runners who participated in the 30th annual Broad Street Run Sunday morning.

The 10-mile foot race drew runners from across the country.  Mayor Michael Nutter got things started with the blow of an airhorn at 8:30:

“This has become a national, if not international event.  Everyone knows Broad Street is one of the longest straight streets in the country.”

Broad Street Run Has Special Meaning For Local Family

A Royersford, Chester County woman with Multiple Sclerosis was planning to spend her 50th birthday by taking part in the 2009 Broad Street Run with her four daughters.

Mary Brown and daughters, Meghan, Allison, Elizabeth and Emily (pictured above, with father and husband Tim) had one goal in mind for the 10-mile race:

“We want to finish.  That’s the goal, to finish.”

Mary started running somewhat out of defiance about ten years ago after she was diagnosed with a mild case of MS.
