May day parade minneapolis

Giant masks and puppets, good community vibes, and what looks to be a sunny Sunday: It’s all going to combine May 3 for the annual MayDay Parade and Festival, produced by the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre.

The event in and around south Minneapolis’ Powderhown Park culminates a month of community puppet- and mask-making to support this year’s theme, “Our Common Treasury — Dig It.”

HOBT describes the theme this way: “HOBT’s MayDay Parade, Ceremony, and Festival has always been rooted in two important traditional celebrations — the celebration of the “green root” of Earth’s green energy rising in spring, and the “red root” of human work energy rising from mind, heart and hand. Our theme this year celebrates the merging of the red and green energies of the world: cheering on the merging of the social justice movement with the environmental movement. As we experience the failure of our economic systems, we gather to rebuild an economic system that protects and sustains our Earth as a ‘Common Treasury for All.’ “
