It’s now less than a week until this year’s Budvar Cheltenham Jazz Festival, which runs from Tuesday 28 April until Monday 4 May and is sponsored by Jazzwise.

It kicks off the spring and summer jazz festival season with its usual eclectic mix of big names and emerging talent from mainstream to modern jazz.

Headline names appearing include Jack DeJohnette, Madeleine Peyroux, Hugh Masekela, alongside leading US players Dave Douglas, Don Byron, Pat Martino and artist in residence Dave Liebman. The varied programme also includes a large cross-section of the buzzing UK jazz scene with the likes of James Allsopp’s new trio The Golden Age Of Steam, pianist Robert Mitchell’s acclaimed 3io, Mercury Prize nominated Portico Quartet, trumpeter Tom Arthurs‘ new Subtopia band, while Nikki Yeoh appears with John Surman and guitarist Phil Robson reprises his fine quartet with Dave Liebman who also appears with the BBC Big Band.

The Ballard Jazz Festival, a cornerstone of the Northwest Jazz Scene since 2003, celebrates its 6th season with a 5-day schedule of events, April 22-26, 2009. Again, the festival is teaming with the Nordic Heritage Museum to present Saturday night’s mainstage concert featuring performances by the dynamic New York vibraphonist Joe Locke. Featured with him is Portland-based pianist Darrell Grant and special guest, Seattle trumpeter Thomas Marriott. Also on the bill is the virtuostic guitarist Corey Christiansen and his quartet.

The perennially-packed Friday night Ballard Jazz Walk features 19 bands in 12 venues along historic Ballard Avenue and is a showcase for many of the icons of Northwest Jazz.

The full lineup for Lollapalooza 2009 has been announced. This year’s star studded event will feature Tool, The Killers, Kings of Leon, Jane’s Addiction, Kings of Leon, Beastie Boys, and Depeche Mode as headliners.

The artists that will be featured on the undercard for the massive, three day event are no less impressive and cover the entire musical spectrum. They include Lou Reed, Snoop Dogg, Vampire Weekend, Rise Against, TV on the Radio, the Decemberists, Ben Harper, Thievery Corporation, MSTRKRFT, Asher Roth, Kid Cudi, Animal Collective, Band of Horses, Of Montreal, Deerhunter and Ida Maria.

Lollapalooza 2009 will take place August 7-9 in Chicago’s Grant Park. A limited number of advance-price three-day passes are now available through Lollapalooza.com for $190. When those are gone, regular three-day passes will go on sale for $205. There are also VIP packages and private luxury cabanas available for the well-heeled members of the alternative nation.

Pearl Jam’s bassist, Jeff Ament, along with another band employee, were recently mugged outside of a recording studio in Atlanta, Georgia. Though the mugging took place on April 27th, it wasn’t reported to the major media outlets until recently.

Jeff and another band employee were outside of the recording studio in a rented Jeep Commander. As the story goes, three masked men armed with knives emerged from the surrounding woods and smashed the windows of the Jeep. They reportedly got away with around $7300 in cash and goods, including a BlackBerry (boo hoo).

Ament tried to bail and started running from the scene, but one of the masked men caught up to him and tossed him to the ground. The suspect then plucked his backpack, which included his passport. The suspects then fled back into the woods and hopped into a black Nissan Maxima, their supposed getaway car. Security cameras outside of the studio captured the incident but are unable to identify the suspects since they cleverly wore masks. Gee, criminals sure are getting smart these days!

MEMPHIS (AP) — Tennessee is denying that anyone connected with Memphis has spoken with either coach Bruce Pearl or its athletic director about replacing John Calipari as the Tigers’ basketball coach.
WMC-TV reported on its website Thursday that sources said Memphis had offered Pearl a seven-year, $21 million package to take over for Calipari. Calipari was introduced Wednesday as Kentucky’s new coach and the highest paid in college basketball with an eight year, $31.65 million deal.

“No one has talked to Memphis,” Tennessee spokeswoman Tiffany Carpenter told The Associated Press.

Tennessee planned a statement later Thursday.

Up-and-coming rapper ‘Dolla Bill’ was murdered late Monday afternoon after he was shot in the head at a posh Los Angeles shopping center known as the Beverly Center. His real name was Roderick Anthony Burton II and he was first discovered at just 12 years old by the famous rapper Akon.

Akon worked with Dolla Bill to release his first single called “Who the F*** is that?”; Rapper T-Pain was also featured on the track. What makes this story even worse is that Dolla Bill had just arrived in LA from Atlanta to begin recording his debut album.

Police have a suspect in custody, who is being held at $1 million bail for pending murder charges, reports CNN. The suspect’s name is Aubrey Louis Berry and he is 23 years old. Police caught up with him at Los Angeles International Airport, where he was likely on his way out of the city. The motive in the killing isn’t yet apparent, but I’ll keep you updated as I learn more about this story.

Tomorrow is February 24th, 2009. It is also a very special day of the year: It’s Mardi Gras (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mardi_Gras), or Fat Tuesday. What better place to spend the day than at Cleveland’s own Fat Fish Blue (fatfishblue.com). Tomorrow, Fat Fish Blue will be celebrating the only way they know how: By turning the restaurant/venue into a giant party. There will be food, fun, and music all day long.

The fun will start at 11:00am when the restaurant opens for the day. The restaurant will have their annual Mardi Gras Day buffet set up where you can enjoy Creole food, some of it is from the menu, and some is made special just for Fat Tuesday. As usual Adam Lambert did not disappoint, he performed a dynamic arrangement of the Yvonne Elliman hit “If I Can’t Have You.” He acted like a goth ‘Tony Manero’ and made the song his own.

ACL lineup features Pearl Jam, Beastie Boys, Mos Def

The eighth edition of the Austin City Limits Music Festival is still about six months away, but the midnight release of the lineup may generate a lot of talk around Austin.

ACL 2009 headliners include Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Beastie Boys, Kings of Leon and Ben Harper and Relentless7. Other bands include Thievery Corporation, Mos Def, Sonic Youth, John Legend, Lilly Allen, K’Naan and The Decemberists.

Call of Duty: World at War’s Map Pack 1 was downloaded a million times in its first weekend so a second map pack is a foregone conclusion. Treyarch officially announced it today and revealed what sort of locales the new maps will feature.

Like Map Pack 1, Map Pack 2 will have three normal multiplayer maps and one zombie co-op map. The announcement gives a brief description of each: “Battle to control the river bridge in ‘Banzai’ – a bright jungle map featuring a waterfall and hidden caves. In ‘Corrosion’ face down your enemy in a shattered train yard, and in “Sub Pens” wipe the monsoon rain from your eyes as you struggle over a bombed-out submarine base. The Zombies make a return in ‘Shi No Numa’ (Zombie Swamp) featuring Perk machines, the deadly new Wunderwaffe DG-2, new Achievements / Trophies… and flaming Hell Hounds!”

Map Pack 2 will be released for the Xbox 360 and PS3 in June. There was a two week delay between the console and PC release of the first map pack so we could be looking at a similar situation here, too. The first map pack is free for PC owners but costs 800 Microsoft Points ($10) for the PS3/360.

The full lineup for Lollapalooza 2009 has been announced. This year’s star studded event will feature Tool, The Killers, Kings of Leon, Jane’s Addiction, Kings of Leon, Beastie Boys, and Depeche Mode as headliners.

The artists that will be featured on the undercard for the massive, three day event are no less impressive and cover the entire musical spectrum. They include Lou Reed, Snoop Dogg, Vampire Weekend, Rise Against, TV on the Radio, the Decemberists, Ben Harper, Thievery Corporation, MSTRKRFT, Asher Roth, Kid Cudi, Animal Collective, Band of Horses, Of Montreal, Deerhunter and Ida Maria.

Lollapalooza 2009 will take place August 7-9 in Chicago’s Grant Park. A limited number of advance-price three-day passes are now available through Lollapalooza.com for $190. When those are gone, regular three-day passes will go on sale for $205. There are also VIP packages and private luxury cabanas available for the well-heeled members of the alternative nation.

ACL lineup features Pearl Jam, Beastie Boys, Mos Def

The eighth edition of the Austin City Limits Music Festival is still about six months away, but the midnight release of the lineup may generate a lot of talk around Austin.

ACL 2009 headliners include Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Beastie Boys, Kings of Leon and Ben Harper and Relentless7. Other bands include Thievery Corporation, Mos Def, Sonic Youth, John Legend, Lilly Allen, K’Naan and The Decemberists.

Call of Duty: World at War’s Map Pack 1 was downloaded a million times in its first weekend so a second map pack is a foregone conclusion. Treyarch officially announced it today and revealed what sort of locales the new maps will feature.

Like Map Pack 1, Map Pack 2 will have three normal multiplayer maps and one zombie co-op map. The announcement gives a brief description of each: “Battle to control the river bridge in ‘Banzai’ – a bright jungle map featuring a waterfall and hidden caves. In ‘Corrosion’ face down your enemy in a shattered train yard, and in “Sub Pens” wipe the monsoon rain from your eyes as you struggle over a bombed-out submarine base. The Zombies make a return in ‘Shi No Numa’ (Zombie Swamp) featuring Perk machines, the deadly new Wunderwaffe DG-2, new Achievements / Trophies… and flaming Hell Hounds!”

Map Pack 2 will be released for the Xbox 360 and PS3 in June. There was a two week delay between the console and PC release of the first map pack so we could be looking at a similar situation here, too. The first map pack is free for PC owners but costs 800 Microsoft Points ($10) for the PS3/360.
