The Washington State Department of Revenue will staff a booth at the home show at the Qwest Field Event Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 16, in conjunction with a promotion by radio station B97.3. The booth is located on the main floor near the show’s information center.

The odds of finding something to claim are better than ever, Unclaimed Property Manager Patti Wilson said. That’s because the unclaimed property database contains more than three million names that have been collected since the 1950s, and about $600 million in unclaimed property.

The much anticipated Cash for Clunkers Program is officially in full swing. The U.S. Government is finally giving a chunk of the bailout back to the everyday person, offering between $3500 and $4000 for old vehicle trade-ins with the purchase of a new vehicle. Not too shabby if you’re in the market for a new car or have an old one laying around.

Clearly, the strategy here is two-fold: the first part of the plan is to cut back on fuel demand and greenhouse gases by getting rid of old clunkers and trading them for modern, fuel-efficient cars; the second part is to stimulate the economy by getting people to open up their wallets and spend some cash. Uncle Sam says he has a pool of around $1 billion to devote to the Cash for Clunkers Program. The program is slated to go until November 30th of this year, but will stop early if funds are depleted. So go and trade your clunker in while there’s still some loot left!

Auto maker General Motors (GM) announced today that it will be closing 1100 dealerships across the U.S. by 2010, or roughly 1 out of every 6 dealerships. Many of the dealerships that GM chose to shut down are the ones that primarily sell the Hummer, Saab, Saturn and Pontiac brands. Their plan is that those 4 brands will either be sold or closed by the end of 2010. GM already announced that Pontiac will stop production by 2010 and the other 3 brands will be sold. It’s likely that these dealerships can strike new deals with whoever picks up the Hummer, Saab and Saturn brands.

These 1100 closings add to the already 300 GM dealerships that have shut down due to a huge decrease in sales and the difficulty for potential buyers to get a car loan. The closings are GM’s attempt to restructure and prove to the Government that they’re a viable company. If they can’t do so by June 1st, they’ll be forced to restructure in Chapter 11 bankrupcty. Selling off the weak brands and closing all the dealerships is a step in the right direction, but I’m just still not sure if it’s too little, too late.

Since I’m not a big fan of roller coasters and other theme park rides, the fact that Six Flags recently filed for bankruptcy doesn’t really bother me.

Six Flags had been staving off the looming bankruptcy, trying to negotiate its increasing debt outside of court with private lenders. However, when they couldn’t reach an agreement, they had no choice but to file for bankruptcy in a Delaware court early Saturday morning.

The New York Times reports that Six Flags had a staggering $2.4 billion in debt and faced a payment of $300 million to preferred stockholders this August. Though the newly-installed management team has done a great job of cutting Six Flags’ net losses over the past 2 years, it wasn’t enough to counterbalance a 24% drop in revenue. And, because of the credit markets still largely frozen, Six Flags had a difficult time trying to offload their debt.

Six Flags had been staving off the looming bankruptcy, trying to negotiate its increasing debt outside of court with private lenders. However, when they couldn’t reach an agreement, they had no choice but to file for bankruptcy in a Delaware court early Saturday morning.

The New York Times reports that Six Flags had a staggering $2.4 billion in debt and faced a payment of $300 million to preferred stockholders this August. Though the newly-installed management team has done a great job of cutting Six Flags’ net losses over the past 2 years, it wasn’t enough to counterbalance a 24% drop in revenue. And, because of the credit markets still largely frozen, Six Flags had a difficult time trying to offload their debt.

The Washington State Department of Revenue will staff a booth at the home show at the Qwest Field Event Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 16, in conjunction with a promotion by radio station B97.3. The booth is located on the main floor near the show’s information center.

The odds of finding something to claim are better than ever, Unclaimed Property Manager Patti Wilson said. That’s because the unclaimed property database contains more than three million names that have been collected since the 1950s, and about $600 million in unclaimed property.

Many years ago my ex-wife, Vicki Stringfellow, got a Discover Credit Card. Discover put my name on it without my knowledge. I knew she had the card, but I didn’t know I was on it. Not only does this reflect on my credit rating, but they keep letting her charge more and more based on the strength of my credit. What they are doing is illegal, but they don’t care because they can get away with it. Or can they?

Possibly one of the most devastating genetic disorders, Tay-Sachs disease is fatal, and children who are diagnosed with the disease rarely live beyond four years. Children with Tay-Sachs disease appear normal at birth, but when they are around 3 to 6 months old, they develop symptoms ranging from deafness and blindness to seizures and dementia, which eventually results in death. The Mayo Clinic elaborates on certain other symptoms of the disease that include decreased eye contact in infants, lack of crawling or smiling, and exhibiting slow body growth. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, those suffering from this disorder also have a characteristic “cherry-red spot” in their eyes. In fact, it was this cherry-red spot that first led to the characterization of the disease by British ophthalmologist Warren Tay in 1881.

Considering the debilitating effects of the disorder, it is hard not to wonder what causes the disease. The Genetics Home Reference website describes Tay-Sachs as a disease caused by the build-up of a fatty substance called GM2 ganglioside in the brain. The buildup of the ganglioside is caused by disrupted activity of the enzyme beta-hexosaminidase A, which is present in the lysosomes of cells and is normally responsible for degrading GM2 ganglioside. If beta-hexosaminidase A malfunctions, GM2 ganglioside builds up inside the cells to toxic levels. This buildup is particularly prominent in neurons in the brain and spinal cord, and hence the disease affects the nervous system. The hereditary component of the disease is due to the fact that individuals with the disease have a mutation in the HEX A gene, which is responsible for creating the beta-hexosaminidase A enzyme. A mutation in the HEX A gene causes defects in the formation of the enzyme, which prevents the enzyme from being able to degrade GM2 ganglioside.

In spite of the diseases being fatal, according to the National Genome Research Institute, one in 250 people possesses the mutated version of HEX A. With such a high rate of occurrence, it would seem that the disease is fairly common and should affect a large number of people. To understand why this is not the case, we need to go back to the basics of genetics, which state that genes always come in pairs; hence, there is a pair of HEX A genes in the body. If only one of these genes is mutated, the person is perfectly normal and shows no symptoms of the disease. People with just one copy of the gene are called carriers of the disease. The disease manifests itself only when a person contains two mutated copies of the gene. Children receive one of gene of the pair from one parent and the other from the other parent. Thus a child of one carrier parent and one parent without the mutated gene will be perfectly normal; children of two carriers, however have a 25 percent chance of contracting the disease. As stated on www.tay-sachs.org, the disease is fairly common in those of Eastern European Jewish descent, with one in 27 of them being carriers. Currently, there is no cure for the disease, and the disease is fatal for anyone with two defective copies of the HEX A gene. Tests for detecting whether one is a carrier of the gene do exist. The tests are simple blood tests and can easily help couples decide whether they want to have children if both parents turn out to be carriers.

Alley, once a superfit ingenue (see left), has battled huge weight fluctuations for many years, and has also overcome drug abuse. The former Cheers star is divorced from actor Parker Stevenson.

In 2008, Kirstie was dropped as the spokesperson of Jenny Craig after having been its public face for three years. She was replaced by actress Valerie Bertinelli, who lost almost 50 lbs. on the diet plan. Bertinelli, 49, then stunned the world by appearing on the April 2009 cover of People magazine in a bikini.

Everybody loves Fridays, don’t you agree? I myself, treat Friday as a day for me to unwind everything I’ve done at work. But what if everybody just goes too far? Nobody wants to work anymore, wears anything they want and does whatever they desire, its a recipe for Total Disaster. That is why I’m so excited to watch The Office Season 5 Episode 24. The Office “Casual Friday” will give us a scenario when the above happens. The Office 5×24 (0r 5.24) will be airing on April 30, 2009 so be sure to mark your calendars to watch The Office Casual Friday. Everybody loves Fridays, don’t you agree? I myself, treat Friday as a day for me to unwind everything I’ve done at work. But what if everybody just goes too far? Nobody wants to work anymore, wears anything they want and does whatever they desire, its a recipe for Total Disaster. That is why I’m so excited to watch The Office Season 5 Episode 24. Jon Winkelried, co-chief operating officer of Goldman Sachs, is retiring next month for personal reasons, a spokesman for the firm said Tuesday.

Winkelried, 49, has worked at Goldman for 26 years and is looking to spend more time with his family and on his horse ranch, spokesman Lucas van Praag said.

He will not receive any sort of severance payment. He had planned to leave last summer, but as the markets eroded, he elected to stay with the firm, van Praag said.

The Recycle Bank is fast becoming a smart idea that is being put to use in many areas of the country.  Everyone it seems has jumped on the “Go Green” bandwagon and so many are coming up with ingenious ideas to encourage the majority to “think” green.  RecycleBank’s Ron Gonen cofounder and CEO and largest shareholder has come up with the idea of getting compensated by recycling.

If that doesn’t motivate people to recycle what will?

In my article entitled, “Recycling and organizing,” I wrote that I try to reuse many of the things that come into my home first, in that way, the amount that is actually sent to be recycled is reduced.  But who wouldn’t want to basically get paid to recycle?

As part of his testimony, a transcript of which was reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, Mr. Lewis said the government wanted him to keep quiet while the two sides negotiated government funding to help BofA absorb Merrill and its huge losses.

“Under normal circumstances, banks must alert their shareholders of any materially significant financial hits. But these weren’t normal times: Late last year, Wall Street was crumbling and BofA faced intense government pressure to buy Merrill to keep the crisis from spreading. Disclosing losses at Merrill — which eventually totaled $15.84 billion for the fourth quarter — could have given BofA’s shareholders an opportunity to stop the deal and let Merrill collapse instead.” I’m seeing a lot of potential litigation and prosecution as this bailout thing unravels. Government (and corporate) lawyers and officials will no doubt protest that they were doing what the country wanted in the face of an unprecedented crisis, but we’ve seen how well that argument plays once the crisis is over . . . .

Verizon LTE deal – In a decision that has been eagerly awaited by the global cellular industry, US mobile operator Verizon Wireless (a JV between Verizon and Vodafone) has announced plans to upgrade its network to 3G Long Term Evolution and has named Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent as its initial vendors’.
At this morning’s highly anticipated keynote address at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Verizon Communications’ executive vice president and CTO Dick Lynch named the key vendors for the company’s LTE network deployment.  Ericsson and Alcatel Lucent scored deals to be the primary infrastructure vendors for the radio access network. In addition,  Alcatel Lucent and Nokia Siemens will be the key suppliers for the IMS network that will enable rich multimedia applications.  Finally, the enhanced packet core will be provided by Alcatel Lucent, Ericsson and Starent Networks.

Verizon, which secured 700 MHz spectrum last year in the spectrum auction, has been field testing LTE with Vodafone in Minneapolis, Columbus, Ohio, and Northern New Jersey, as well as in Budapest, Düsseldorf, and Madrid, with a variety of network infrastructure providers.  The field trials have demonstrated download rates of 50 to 60 Mbps peak speeds, though actual average download results will not be determined until commercial launch.

Verizon plans to start deploying LTE at year-end and will launch it with a significant footprint in 2010. In an interview with FierceWireless, Lynch said, “I can demonstrate a commercial system this year.  I can show you a footprint of respectable magnitude in 2010.”   (Source: fiercewireless.com)

The much anticipated Cash for Clunkers Program is officially in full swing. The U.S. Government is finally giving a chunk of the bailout back to the everyday person, offering between $3500 and $4000 for old vehicle trade-ins with the purchase of a new vehicle. Not too shabby if you’re in the market for a new car or have an old one laying around.

Clearly, the strategy here is two-fold: the first part of the plan is to cut back on fuel demand and greenhouse gases by getting rid of old clunkers and trading them for modern, fuel-efficient cars; the second part is to stimulate the economy by getting people to open up their wallets and spend some cash. Uncle Sam says he has a pool of around $1 billion to devote to the Cash for Clunkers Program. The program is slated to go until November 30th of this year, but will stop early if funds are depleted. So go and trade your clunker in while there’s still some loot left!

Ron Gonen of Recycle Bank is named 2009 United Nations Environment Program Champion of the earth. The founder and CEO of Recycle Bank Gonen is one of 7 environmental leaders in the world honored today in Paris.

Champions of the Earth is an international environmental award established in 2004 by the UNEP to acknowledge the best and brightest who have made a significant contribution globally, regionally and beyond, to the protection and sustainable management of the Earth’s environment and natural resources. This year’s award recognizes prominent and inspirational examples of environmental leadership in the areas of Policy Leadership, Science and Innovation, Entrepreneurial Vision, Inspiration and Action, and Next-Generation Champions. Past award winners hail from a diverse background, from presidents and economists, to scientists and philosophers, to religious and civic leaders. Candidates are judged by a senior UNEP panel with input from UNEP’s regional offices.

No monetary reward is attached to the prize. Recycle Bank’s Gonen and each laureate receives a trophy specially designed for the occasion with environmentally-friendly materials.

The Recycle Bank is fast becoming a smart idea that is being put to use in many areas of the country.  Everyone it seems has jumped on the “Go Green” bandwagon and so many are coming up with ingenious ideas to encourage the majority to “think” green.  RecycleBank’s Ron Gonen cofounder and CEO and largest shareholder has come up with the idea of getting compensated by recycling.

If that doesn’t motivate people to recycle what will?

Former National Bank of Commerce executive Don Abel has been named market president for Fifth Third Bank’s Tennessee market.

Abel is now in Nashville but before leaving was the community executive for NBC’s nine-bank division and 42-branch network in Memphis.

He joined Fifth Third in 2005 and was a senior vice president and commercial executive for the Tennessee market.

The much anticipated Cash for Clunkers Program is officially in full swing. The U.S. Government is finally giving a chunk of the bailout back to the everyday person, offering between $3500 and $4000 for old vehicle trade-ins with the purchase of a new vehicle. Not too shabby if you’re in the market for a new car or have an old one laying around.

Clearly, the strategy here is two-fold: the first part of the plan is to cut back on fuel demand and greenhouse gases by getting rid of old clunkers and trading them for modern, fuel-efficient cars; the second part is to stimulate the economy by getting people to open up their wallets and spend some cash. Uncle Sam says he has a pool of around $1 billion to devote to the Cash for Clunkers Program. The program is slated to go until November 30th of this year, but will stop early if funds are depleted. So go and trade your clunker in while there’s still some loot left!

These carbon offsetters purchase the credits from an investment fund or a carbon development company that has aggregated the credits from individual projects. The quality of the credits is based in part on the validation process and sophistication of the fund or development company that acted as the sponsor to the carbon project. This is reflected in their price; voluntary units typically have less value than the units sold through the rigorously-validated Clean Development Mechanism[1].

The inconvenience of the sky being darkened is nothing to the lasting effects of all the carbon being thrown into the atmosphere and radically changing our climate by trapping the heat from the sun (once the clouds of ash have disappeared).
