May day parade minneapolis

Giant masks and puppets, good community vibes, and what looks to be a sunny Sunday: It’s all going to combine May 3 for the annual MayDay Parade and Festival, produced by the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre.

The event in and around south Minneapolis’ Powderhown Park culminates a month of community puppet- and mask-making to support this year’s theme, “Our Common Treasury — Dig It.”

HOBT describes the theme this way: “HOBT’s MayDay Parade, Ceremony, and Festival has always been rooted in two important traditional celebrations — the celebration of the “green root” of Earth’s green energy rising in spring, and the “red root” of human work energy rising from mind, heart and hand. Our theme this year celebrates the merging of the red and green energies of the world: cheering on the merging of the social justice movement with the environmental movement. As we experience the failure of our economic systems, we gather to rebuild an economic system that protects and sustains our Earth as a ‘Common Treasury for All.’ “

NYC Building Collapse

NYC Building Collapse: Crews Sift Through Rubble As Precaution

NEW YORK — A five-story building collapsed at a lower Manhattan construction site on Thursday, but fire officials said it appeared no one was inside.

Emergency crews with a dog were sifting through the building’s rubble and were going through a neighboring building as a precaution.

Lewis Largent, who lives directly across the street, was looking out the window at 6:15 a.m. when “the bricks started trickling off the top corner. I was thinking was it raining or something. Then within 10 seconds it just all came down like a wave or an avalanche.”

Hugh Jackman Shares About His Family and Fatherhood

school of practical philosophy, But the School of Practical Philosophy is non confrontational. We believe there are many forms of Scripture. What is true is true and will never change

Hugh Jackman, who is best known for his role as the enraged mutant Wolverine in the X-Men franchise, attests that he is happily married to his wife of 13 years, Deborra-Lee Furness. They have two multiracial
children—Oscar, now 8, and Ava, soon to be 4.

“Mixed-race babies have such a hard time being adopted that Deb and I checked off that box specifically when we were filling out our forms,” Jackman says. “Our lawyer brought the form back to us and said, ‘This is not the time to be politically correct. Are you sure this is what you want?’ We were definite about it. Adoption is about taking a baby into your home—and your heart. It’s the best thing we’ve ever done.”

On the road again

Fuel is cheaper than it was last year, so maybe it is time to think about the ultimate all-American vacation, the road trip. You could drag out an atlas or a stack of maps, or you could just browse the Web for information on routes such as U.S. 6, meandering through the hills and forests across Pennsylvania’s “road less traveled.” This scenic two-lane wiggles for more than 400 miles between the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania’s northeast corner and the Erie region in the northwest, according to the PA Route 6 Tourist Association — www.paroute6.com — a handy starting place for planning a leisurely drive or serious exploration. Look for “Maps & Transportation” on the left to get a sense of the road’s layout and the towns along the way.

If you’re coming in from the Midwest, you will arrive in Pennsylvania’s Great Lakes Region — www.pagreatlakes.com — by taking Interstate 90 northeast from Cleveland or by going to Pittsburgh and heading north on I-79. They know how you’re getting there; one of their featured brochures is titled “Road Trip,” with suggestions for itineraries built about family fun, history, outdoor adventure and more. Another online brochure is on the area’s fishing, and it has 22 pages of information. Be patient; those brochures take a minute or three to download. Then click the little gray arrows on the menu bar to turn pages.

Click on “Adventures” and then “History” at the top of the page for the area’s huge selection of museums including the Erie Maritime Museum & Brig Niagara — www.brigniagara.org — where you can ride a Great Lakes sailing ship. And try “Amusements” for parks, animal farms and the Oil Creek & Titusville Railroad — www.octrr.org — which offers three-hour trips. (From here)
